Peter A. Larkin Award for Excellence in Fisheries

The Canadian Aquatic Resources Section (CARS) of AFS is now accepting applications for the Peter A. Larkin Student Award for Excellence in Fisheries.

The purpose of the award is to identify the top current MSc and PhD level students that are conducting fisheries research at a Canadian institution.  The award is not restricted to students with Canadian citizenship.

Completed applications must be received no later than 4pm EDTOctober 1, 2017

ExCom Officer Nominations Open!

It’s time again for our annual Executive Committee elections. This year we have several positions available because terms are ending. The positions up for election are:

  • Vice-President
  • Secretary
  • Treasurer
  • Communications Director
  • Student Subunit Representative

Do you know anyone who would fit one of these roles? Are you interested in filling one yourself? Send in your nominations to Past President Mark LaRiviere (mglariviere [at] by 5pm June 16, 2017. EXTENDED to 5pm June 23, 2017!

Please include the following information:

  1. Name of nominee
  2. Email address of nominee (if not a self-nomination)

Note: Candidates must be a member in good standing of the American Fisheries Society AND the WA-BC Chapter.

Abstract submission and registration are now OPEN

Have you been busy preparing your abstract for one of the symposia being featured at our upcoming AGM? We are now accepting submissions! You will find an easy-to-use form right here, but if you have any questions please contact Vice-President Gabe Temple and he will help you out.

At the same time, why not register for the conference and secure that early bird pricing? Our registration page is now open as well! We are using a new system this year where you can register right on this website. We are still able to accept credit card payment through PayPal. Any questions or problems regarding registration, please send an message to Treasurer Martina Beck.

Remember, both the abstract submission and early bird registration deadlines are March 15, 2017. It will be here before you know it, so hurry and secure your spot!!

2017 Chapter & Student Travel Awards

Happy New Year everyone! With our 2017 Annual General Meeting (AGM) right around the corner, it’s time again for our annual Chapter and Student Travel Awards.

We are now accepting nominations for the 2017 Chapter Awards, which will be open until March 1, 2017.

Applications for Student Travel Awards to assist in attending the 2017 AGM are being accepted now until February 15, 2017.

Don’t delay, get those applications in soon!

WDAFS Small Project Grants – application period open!

The Western Division currently has project funding available for Division Chapters, Subunits, and other fisheries-related groups. Grants are usually modest but can help get a project started or be used to complement other funding sources.  This year, the WDAFS Executive Committee approved a budget of $5,000 to fund as many small projects as appropriate.  Applications must be received by the Western Division Past President no later than January 5, 2017 COB Mountain Time.  Questions should be directed to WDAFS Past President Jim Bowker (jim_bowker [at]
