The WA-BC Chapter of AFS would like to say congratulations to one of its members, Nathan B. Furey at the University of British Columbia, for being selected as one of three recipients of the 2016 Peter A. Larkin Award for Excellence in Fisheries at a Canadian Institution (PhD Level). This is awarded annually by the Canadian Aquatic Resources Section (CARS) to identify the top current MSc and PhD level students that are conducting fisheries research at a Canadian institution (not restricted to Canadian citizens).
Nathan’s research focus is on movement ecology and animal migrations, and he has recently been investigating migration behaviour and success of juvenile salmon smolts, predator-prey interactions during migration, and the role of disease in migratory success.
Mark your calendars! The Washington-British Columbia Chapter of the American Fisheries Society announces the 2017 Annual General Meeting to be held in Spokane, Washington on April 10-13, 2017. The meeting location is to be confirmed.
The WA-BC Chapter extends a special invitation to all AFS members and all fellow fisheries professionals in Washington and British Columbia, particularly Tribes and First Nations, to attend and participate in this conference.
The Washington-British Columbia Chapter of the American Fisheries Society is currently inviting candidate statements for the position of Vice President on the Executive Committee. Ever think about developing and refining your leadership skills? Or maybe just giving a little back to an organization that does so much for students, professional development and natural resource conservation? Then now is a great time to get more involved and help the chapter chart the course into the future.
The Vice-President position is a four-year progressive commitment, serving the first year as Vice-President, the second year as President-Elect, the third year as President, and the fourth year as Past-President. During this term of service the Chapter will provide the member an opportunity to represent the Chapter at both a Western Division and Society meeting. Upon completion of the presidential series members are awarded Life Membership to the American Fisheries Society.
The election will run June 1 to June 15, and term will begin in concert with the Society officer transition (September). Further detail and a description of duties the position carries out can be found in our bylaws (http://wabc-afs.org/about-us/bylaws/). Feel free to contact current or recent officers to find out what their experience was like.

Nominations should contain a brief written statement that includes the position you are nominating for, your background, why you want to serve on the Executive Committee, and what vision you have for the Chapter. Level A Fish Passage Assessments at Freshwater Culverts
Cost = $30
When: 1 – 3 PM, Thursday March 31
Workshop: This introductory course provides an overview of the culvert barrier assessment protocols described in WDFW’s 2009 Fish Passage Barrier and Surface Water Diversion Screening Assessment and Prioritization Manual. This nationally used publication provides science-based assessment methods for evaluating various instream features, including a ‘Level A’ and ‘Level B’ barrier analysis for culverts. Participants will learn how to assess fish passage conditions through culverts using the Level A standardized data collection procedures. Learning will occur in the classroom and through hands-on field training. The Level B hydraulic analysis will be introduced, but is not fully covered in this short course. Each attendee will receive a Level A Barrier Analysis Training Certificate of Completion.
Presenter: Justin Zweifel is the Fish Passage Inventory and Assessment Unit Coordinator for the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife. Within the Habitat Program, the Fish Passage Inventory and Assessment Unit includes 10-16 full-time staff working statewide to collect field data on fish passage and screening features. Justin is the agency lead for fish passage training events which are regularly attended by representatives from federal, state, and local governments, tribes, and various conservation groups.
