CHRONOLOGY:

AFS Planning Committee Meetings:

DATE: Wednesday July 1, 2009
EVENT: Teleconference – 2011 Co-chairs

PRESENT:
General Arrangements Co-chair: Cleve Steward; (Larry Dominguez sent updates by email)
Program Co-chair: Dave Ward;
Parent AFS 2011 President Elect: Wayne Hubert
Planning Facilitator: Eric Knudsen

Nashville Promotions

Cleve will talk to Caroline Mercado re committing to chair the Publicity Subcommittee and helping with preparations (poster and video) for Nashville Trade Show booth. Wayne reported that a video clip of him describing the theme, etc., would be prohibitively expensive at UWy in the format requested. He asked that Cleve or Larry do it for him, and that we be sure to work the theme in somehow. Larry will have a sampler of the Wayne Rankin promo video this Friday.

Nashville 2011 Planning Meetings

Cleve also suggested that we acquire a list of all WA-BC AFS members attending the Nashville meeting, to try to engage them for 2011. We will need to wait until close to the meeting to get that subset of names. In the meantime, we can use the chapter listserve to notify any members planning to attend Nashville that we would like to meet with them. We need to settle on our meeting times and places at Nashville, as we had discussed in our previous conference.

Student Activities Committee

Cleve will approach Wyatt Fournier, Dave Beauchamp, and others regarding ideas for potential chair of the Student activities Committee. Eric and Cleve will discuss the latest developments with the WA-BC student subunit as background to establishing the Student Affairs Committee.

Master Scheduler

Larry reported that Mark Celedonia has agreed to serve as the Master Scheduler under the guidance of Accommodations Committee Chair Mark LaRiviere.

Coordinating with Major Sponsors:

Cleve and Eric will arrange for meetings with WDFW Interim Director Phil Anderson, and other influential leaders in the Tacoma/Olympia area over the next few weeks.

Other business

It was suggested by Wayne that, on calls that involve the Committee Chairs, each chair be asked to give a report. That process will more fully engage the committee chairs and allow the Co-Chairs to asses the status of each committee’s progress.

Subsequent to the call, Wayne sent ideas for highlight symposia – see text pasted below.

NEXT CALL IN FOR CO-CHAIRS AND COMMITTEE CHAIRS: Wed August 5, 2009 7:30 AM

IN-PERSON 2011 PLANNING MEETING IN NASHVILLE – TBD

Symposia Ideas from Wayne:

Gentlemen,

To get the ball rolling and stimulate some thinking and discussion regarding highlighted symposia for the 2011 meeting, I have several topics to suggest.  They are not in any order of preference on my part, but represent notions that I have jotted down over the last few weeks.  All of these notions stem from the meeting theme – New Frontiers in Fisheries Management and Ecology: Leading the Way in a Changing World.

Goals and strategies for managing fish and fisheries affected by climate change.  In my opinion, climate change is the most daunting challenge that we face in the future.  I recognize that it may almost be considered “trite” to develop another symposium on the topic, but this is where the AFS can show some leadership and integrate science into policy.  During the June 6th AFS officers call, Gus Rassam reported on his attendance at a meeting of federal government agencies in Shepardstown, WV with the purpose of initiating the development of a national strategy for climate change adaptation among federal agencies.  He observed that turf, missions, policy directives, etc. are likely to limit the ability of federal agencies to work together and define common issues and solutions, particularly ones focused on fisheries.  So, AFS can serve a real function by getting the scientific facts out and guiding debate regarding goals, strategies, and management options.

Goals and strategies for managing aquatic invasive species.  Beyond climate change, invasive species are probably the next most important challenge being faced by fisheries managers, particularly among freshwater fisheries.  The majority of state agencies are developing aquatic invasive species management plans, but there are not a lot of management options.  This is a timely topic that should instigate quite some interest and discussion.

Large-scale collaborations to re-establish or maintain ecological integrity of aquatic ecosystems that support fisheries.  Ecosystem-scale management with the goal of maintaining ecological functions is increasing nationally and internationally, but facilitating fisheries (where the word fishery implies sport or commercial harvest) management within the larger context is a challenge for which there is little guidance.  Examples of how large-scale ecosystem management efforts in which fisheries are both an integral component, as well as a minor component, have been conducted could provide insight to fisheries managers.  From what I understand, the Puget Sound Partnership is an outstanding example of such an effort and could be featured in such a symposium.

Benefits of expanding international involvements of AFS and North American fisheries scientists.  The AFS is promoting more and more international collaborations and involvements, but I am not sure if there is a clear understanding among most AFS members as to why these activities will benefit fisheries.  A seminar with international speakers addressing the benefits they perceive from cross-border collaborations might be a good idea.

            Climate change:

Eric Knudsen: we need to organize symposia topics that are attractive to attendees and clients: Example – Marine fisheries community used to say there is nothing in the program that attracts. So we should incorporate that. What topics would help management issues of particular entities?

Keith Wolfe asks about workshops: Workshop role is fostered by AFS Parent Society, they lead continuing education. ASPRS  – Remote Sensing interest in all sectors for Puget Sound – vendors and ASPRS are amendable to workshops/training on GIS-Remote Sensing and could provide Tradeshow participants and sponsors.

Cleve and Larry inquired to Craig Busack about planning a meeting with Phil Anderson to renew 2011 committment  -

WDFW will provide for airfare and registration for Craig Busack to attend Nashville.

Eric will send updated list for ideas for names of subcommittees. Committee Chairs can take a look at that and consider positions. Subcommittee chairs can be teams, but need a primary contact.

Larry D having slight challenges to Nashville attendance – right now he is planning on it, needs to formalize – WABC Chapter will fund Chapter President expense

Art and logo work, Steve Robinson checking with Tribal artists. Get one artist might be best to put together for final  –  Idea of using Native American motif – generally agreed. SF budgeted $2,000 for so we need to consider what we might want to budget for 2011 and what artist would cost to carry through all needs for logos, insignias, etc.
